If anyone knows the source of this image, I'd love to credit them.

If anyone knows the source of this image, I’d love to credit them.

There are basically three ways to integrate the Cuthuhlu Mythos into an In Nomine Game.

  1. Creatures from the Mythos are powerful and ambitious gestalt spirits that have not yet attained godhood. (Any individual incarnation is manageable, but they keep coming back).
  2. The Mythos is a distant Pantheon of Ethereal Deities. Dangerous, but unlikely to overturn celestial primacy.
  3. The truth of Azathoth is equal to, if not greater than the truth of God and Lucifer. Powerful, malignant, and recently alerted to the presence of the true Corporeal realm.

Since it is Halloween, I have decided to focus on this last scenario.

There is no such thing as an unintelligent superior

David, Haagenti, In Nomine, Mammon, Saminga

In Nomine is a mechanically uneven system, this is more or less understood by anyone who has ever read the manuals. It is also basically irrelevant. In Nomine is more about the story than the mechanics.

This is part of why I have always been bothered by the representation of David, Saminga, Haagenti, and Mammon.  All four are Superiors; some of the most powerful, creative, intelligent beings in all of creation. And yet they are constantly treated like fools and dupes.

Lucifer might be able to easily manipulate Saminga – but that should be like saying that the sun is bright. Just because someone can be fooled by the greatest liar in all of creation does not make him a fool.

Calabite, Deceased, Demogorgon, In Nomine

“The world is destined to destroy itself, I just point the way.”

Demogorgon was one of the first Hellborn to make a serious play for a Princedom. Physically he appears as a great insect with tentacles for legs an a pair of etin-like heads with their skin flayed back to look even more monstrous. When obligated to take human form the Archduke favored gaunt vessels.

Grigori, GURPs, In Nomine

all-seeing-eye

One of the best things to come out of GURPs In Nomine was the addition of mechanics for the Grigori. Unfortunately, they clearly are meant for a GURPs game.

I mean, they could be ported to the d666 system easily enough:

A Grigori may add 8 to the TN of any roll made to perceive one of the ‘standard’ disturbances in the Symphony. They may also detect mental damage as if it were corporeal damage (without the bonus), and treat mental domination as a disturbance of 2. Oh, and they also get a bonus to their Role.

“The world is mostly water. Ever constant, ever changing.”

Though he died as one of the Malakim, Oannes was originally a barrel-chested Elohite with a great big beard and heart large enough to match. His compassion was said to be enough to encompass the entire world. He worked closely with Janus during the creation of the earth, and together they discovered how waves, and rain, and clouds worked. For millenia the Archangel of Water served as the caretaker of plants, animals, and mankind alike.

From Quest of the Golden Ape

From Quest of the Golden Ape

“The world is waiting to be plundered. Take what you can and damn the rest.”

Before having his word stolen by Valefor, Genubath was one of Hell’s mightiest rogues: a renegade who made evil and so won himself a princedom.  The Shedite Prince is terribly proud of his new acquisitions and parades them at every opportunity. Since gaining his princedom he has never been known to wear the same host in public.

Metatron from Shin Meagmi Tensei

Metatron from Shin Meagmi Tensei

“The world is simply the word given form.”

Before Lawrence was placed in charge of the Host, before Lucifer ever considered defiance against the Lord, Heaven was managed by the grand Seraph Metatron, the Archangel of The Word. It is said that Metatron spoke with the Voice of God – and that so long as he existed there could be no question in regards to the divine plan, and no Free Will among the Angels.

In Nomine, Liber Neglecta, RPG

Once this “book” is up and running, it will serve as a clearing house for my thoughts on the In Nomine RPG published by Steve Jackson Games. It will include mechanics for missing or alternative Superiors, new Songs and Discords, variant skills and mechanics, and other ways to view the universe.

What it will not include is any material provided in the physical or digital manuals put out by Steve Jackson Games.

I welcome input from other In Nomine enthusiasts.

For those of you who have managed to get your hands on the GM Guide – I tend towards gray games of middle-low contrast. I like it when Angels can be morally questionable and demons can have the best interest of man at heart – but on some level I do still like a good guys/bad guys dichotomy, even if I play with it a lot.
