Alaemon, Duchies, Gebbeleth, In Nomine, Stygia

Die_Gartenlaube_(1887)_b_705_2Each of Alaemon‘s duchies has two names. The bureau designation (SI1, SI2, &c.) is Alaemon’s name for the duchy. The other is Gebbeleth‘s old title for the corresponding duchy. Inside the conspiracy, only the first is supposed to be used. However, since nobody really respects Alaemon and the old form is so much more interesting, many in Hell still apply the Gebbelite titles.

All of Alaemon’s duchies are located in Stygia, though theoretically he could claim Gebbeleth’s secret territories if he ever finds them.

Queer Content Intro from Monster Hearts

Queer Content Intro from Monsterhearts

Last week Analog Game Studios posted a brief history of LGBTQ themes in table top role playing games. In Nomine didn’t make the list (which isn’t surprising given how little explicit engagement the system has with queer sexuality and gender identities), but it is definitely an informative read and both IN and its avoidance of queer themes fits into the trends described.

I suggest you give it a read –

Baphomet

Church of Satan’s Baphomet Statue

As you may or may not have been aware, the Church of Satan planned to unveil their statue of Baphomet yesterday in Detroit. The Church of Satan commissioned the statue as a compliment to the Ten Commandments monument in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court eventually determined that the Ten Commandments statue violated the constitutional provision against establishing a state religion and barred all religious monuments from state grounds. The Church of Satan then changed the location of the unveiling to Detroit, where the church has a permanent conclave.

The Church of Satan needed to change the location of the unveiling once more when their venue canceled their contract after receiving threats that protesters would burn down their establishment.

In the end the Church of Satan established a four step security protocol for the event which required all attendees to sign the following before learning where the event would be held:

I agree that by signing this document under any name, given or adopted, actual or pseudonymous, I am hereby avowing my soul to Satan (aka Abbadon, aka Lucifer, aka Beelzebub, aka The Antichrist). I do so knowing that He (aka The Fallen One, aka The Father of Lies) or any of His representatives may choose to collect my eternal soul at any time, with or without notice. I understand that my signature or mark representing any name, real or made up, upon these papers constitutes a lasting and eternal contract, and that there will be no further negotiations on the matter of my eternal soul.

Now that the statue has been unveiled, the Church of Satan intends to gift it to Little Rock, Arkansas. A state capitol which also has a Ten Commandments monument, and one where the State Supreme Court determined that religious monuments do not violate the constitutional ban on the establishment of religion so long as the monument is paid for by private funds.

Liber Neglecta, WordPress

WordPress has just instated a global update to how menus work. It is no longer trivial to have pages that are hidden from the menu (and custom menus appear to be entirely disabled). As a result I will be working on the site architecture so that the default menu will at least approximate something I would be comfortable with.

If menus appear or dissapear, or if pages jump around between menus, this is why.

(Also, the main Header Image appears to be stuck on the default image. If this persists I may need to change to a different design)

EDIT: 7/27 – Customized Header Images and Menus are now saving properly. However, I may still use this opportunity to revisit the site architecture.

Fallen Angel

A human like “Angel” has fallen out of the skies over London. The extremely human like creature with what seems to be “angel” wings as arms appears to have fallen from the sky at around 1:50pm this afternoon.

The ‘Angel’ like creature was quickly rushed away by what seemed to be undercover police officers dressed in suits and sunglasses, resembling the characters in the hit movie Men in Black.

It comes just hours before NASA announced finding ‘Earth 2.0′ the most habitable planet ever discovered.

So I was just thinking of writing a post on demons and the state of news in hell when io9 obligingly posted The Five Best and Worst Demons to Get Possessed By, which I think perfectly illustrates a number of the points I was going to make.

I may still write this post at some point, but you won’t believe what comes next….

By the Book

Both the Angelic Player’s Guide and the Infernal Player’s Guide give suggestions on how to name the angels of the various choirs and demons of the assorted bands. As I mentioned in the about, I’m not going to repeat information that comes directly from the manuals.

However, there are several tips that go beyond what’s in those books.

Dragons, Heresy, In Nomine

Japanese Dragon MapAccording to the Ethereal Player’s Guide, there are three types of dreams that cannot form into Ethereals: Angels, Demons, and Dragons. The exact reasons are left unclear, but the implication is that dreams of Angels become Angels, dreams of Demons become Demons, and Dreams of Dragons die out because Dragons cannot survive since Uriel killed them all.

But there is another possibility, dragons still exist but have found a way to keep themselves hidden or invisible.

Baal, Bertolt Brecht, David Bowie, Movie Review

David Bowie in Bertolt Brecth's BAAL
Rating: Overall 1, In Nomine 2
I was recently reminded that early in his career Bertolt Brecht wrote a play with a Baal as the titular character. While it is not about the demon Baal per-se, it is about a demon of a man, the first of Brecht’s many anti-heroes.

In 1982 the BBC recorded a translated version of the play with David Bowie playing the eponymous character. Like many BBC productions of the time, the pace is quite slow for American audiences.
