King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain signed the Alhambra Decree, expelling all Jews from Spain (specifically: from Aragon, Castile, and their territories).

This decree came just after the co-monarchs had expelled the Moors from Spain by force of arms. The Muslim rulers of Al-Andalus had afforded special status to “People of the Book,” making Moorish Spain one of the friendliest places in medieval Europe for Jews to settle.

Jews were required to convert or depart by July 31, 1492.

However, concerns remained that these conversions were insincere, setting the stage for the excesses of the Spanish Inquisition (which had actually been established in 1478).
