According to the Ethereal Player’s Guide spirits containing Astronomical Concepts as elements tend to be exalted, above the world, and abstract – those who awaken the element often consider themselves royalty, and may not be wrong.
That book only introduces three of the Astrological concepts: Sun, Moon, and Stars. It’s high time to introduce a few more.
Due to the terms of SJ Games web licensing, I will not be quoting materials or rules from official materials in this post. In order to get the full value of 3E series posts, you will need a copy of the Ethereal Player’s Guide.
Astronomical Concepts
Sun
Sun spirits are examined at length in the Ethereal Player’s Guide. They are typically heroes and protagonists. They are glorious, forthright, and larger than life.
Examples: King Arthur, Apollo, Ra, Amaterasu, “Louis XIV”
Moon
As an occluded mirror to sun spirits, moon spirits are often consorts, sages, and advisers. They are often indirect and deceitful, though rarely outright duplicitous.
Examples: Artemis, Coyote, Tsukuyomi, Kokopeilli, Xmukane
Additional Affinity: Deception
Stars
Star spirits typically represent the realization of ones hopes or dreams, though they can also serve as guides or as the subject of a quest.
Examples: Asteria, Nyx, Itzpapaloti, Cassiopeia, Sirius, Ursa Major, Shooting Star
Time
The spirits of time are often mistaken for the spirits of the stars, but are often much more keenly interested in one’s origins, mortal travails, and end. They are often very young or very old unless they are part of a trio.
Examples: Father Time, The Norns, The Moirai, Kali, Laima, Dieves Valdytojos
Additional Song: Memory
Void
The vast emptiness between all things from which suns and moons and planets are born – often seen as queen mothers who once reigned but no longer hold direct dominion over the heavens. They may be nurturing or they may be cold, but once present they feel like they are everywhere.
Examples: Kek, Ginnungagap, Ammutseba, Nut
Additional Affinity: Suffocation
Comets
These ethereal prophets act as harbingers of momentous change. They often attend the Astronomical courts as pages and warriors. While often distant and dispassionate, they periodically have periods of intense emotion and volatility.
Examples: Upokoroa, Ketu, Rahu
Additional Song: Numinous Corpus (Flame)
Firmament
The spirits who maintain the separation of sky and heaven are often viewed as too lowborn to fraternize with spirits of the other Astranomical Concepts, but it is their perseverance and strenth that keeps the others from falling. They are typically powerful, dependable sorts.
Examples: Atlas, Pangu, Ubelluris
Additional Song: Might
Black Holes
The newest children of the void are also some of the most powerful. They tend to mark out points of no return. The spirits can be destructive, tenacious, and inescapable, but only to those who stray into their reach.
Additional Affinity: Destruction
The Universe
Many ethereals consider the Universe strand to be one of the closest to the Almighty strand. However, unlike the almighty, Universe spirits tend to lose their sense of self. They exist or existed, but live in such a constant state of abstraction that they rarely have any direct impact on the world around them at all.
Examples: Amma, Brahma, The Red King, The World Egg
Additional Skill: Dreaming
New Worlds
There aren’t many real spirits of new worlds. Early planetary deities often had no connection to the Astrological Concepts (or else a very nominal connection to Stars). Newer planetars are often spirits of Freedom, Hope, Loneliness, Solitude, Life, Migration, Colonization, or Empire in disguise. Still, some spirits have begun to emerge that represent fictional worlds and real exoplanets, and they cannot be fully discounted as members of the Astrological court.
Examples: Kepler 16b, Middle Earth, Arrakis, Bradbury’s Mars
Additional Song: Opening
