Gods, In Nomine, Noragami, Stray God, TV Review

I have something of a weak spot for anime about Japanese gods and spirits, which makes it somewhat surprising that it’s taken me 8 years to finally watch Noragami (“Stray God”).

And while the show has it’s ups and downs, I have to say that it’s a must watch for anyone thinking of playing an ethereal god.

(Spoilers Ahead… but again this show is 8 years old)

In Nomine, Japan, Sorcerery, TV Review, Yokai

As the name suggests, In/Spectre is part ghost story and part mystery, but the most interesting from an In Nomine perspective are the “creatures of the imagination.” Without giving too much away, one of the characters realizes that they can create a yokai by shaping the public reaction to a suspicious death through the clever use of art and social media.

It is definitely a show worth watching if you get the chance! Continue reading →

WicDiv-In-a-Snap

The Wicked + The Divine is an ongoing comic that started in 2014. Written by Kieron Gillen and Illustrated by Jamie McKelvie, it shines a light on brilliance and mortality through the lens of pop stars and divinity.

The premise is relatively straightforward. Every ninety years twelve people will discover that they are reincarnated deities. Overnight they become famous, powerful, and robbed of many of their inhibitions. It’s not that the god’s are evil per-se, but once incarnated they have only two years to live.

The premise is also likely a lie.

Book Review, Fablehaven, GM Tools, McGuffin

FablehavenI recently finished the Fablehaven series of novels authored by Brandon Mull. If you start with the first book, you might wonder why I’ve included a series that focuses on fairies in a blog that specializes in Angels and Demons. Trust me, the Demons play an ever more important role as you go on.

But what’s truly impressive is just how many McGuffins Mull manages to juggle in this series. And not only that, but each and every one of them is a power item. The first book only has one, the second two, and by the time you reach the last book there are something like half a dozen.

Gabriel, Kyriotate, Lawrence, Michael, Movie Review

Legion_posterLegion is a great movie for an In Nomine game master to watch. An absentee god, angels fighting angels, outcasts fighting the host, prophesies, possession, sawed off shotguns. The number of ideas that can be raided from this film is staggering, which makes it all the more unfortunate that it’s not a good film.

Hozuki no What?

Comics, Japan, Nybbas, Ogre, TV Review

Hozuki no Reitetsu (or Hozuki’s Coolheadedness) is a Manga and Anime by Natsumi Eguchi. Both are heavily episodic and revolve around the adventures of Hozuki the Ogre, chief aide to Demon King Enma (lord of the Buddhist underworlds).

As the title implies, Hozuki usually succeeds through a mix of cool, cunning, and level-headedness – though a certain threat of eminent violence is also present.  In spite of this, the series is a comedy. Generally speaking, the ogre is the only character to show a lick of common sense, though he will praise it in others when he sees it.

Book Review, Heavenly Discourse, Satire

Rating: Overall 6, In Nomine 4

Heavenly Discourse is my favorite work of historically contemporary political satire available in print. The work was penned by Charles Erskine Scott Wood, a civil rights lawyer and a veteran of the US Army.

Each of the 40 essays takes the form of a dialog featuring a cast of characters from religion, mythology, world history, and then contemporary politics. The most frequent cast members were God, the Devil, Mark Twain, Jesus, and Saint Peter, and the angels Michael and Gabriel. The series included guest appearances from figures including Hermes, Abraham Lincoln, Confucius, Voltaire, Billy Sunday, Buddah, Margaret Fuller, Mohammad, and Shakespeare.

Sign reads,

5-5-revOur month of sin continues with a review of Sinfest, an independent webcomic written and illustrated by Tatsuya Ishida. While I am accustomed to turning to sinfest.net for a daily dose of parody and satire, it is still hard to wrap my head around the fact that Ishida has been turning out one of these comics every day for more than 15 years.

Damage Control Issue 1

When I first suggested Cleaning Crews, I had been completely unaware that the Marvel Universe had it’s own equivalent: Damage Control.

It’s a premise that’s worth investigating whenever you have super-powered beings wandering around in what is supposedly the normal contemporary world. Now I’ve seen word that Marvel will be bringing Damage Control to television.

If you’re thinking of running such a game, I would suggest tuning in to see how professional actors and writers handle the subject.
