It’s time to continue our roster of angelic names plucked from the pages of Gustav Davidson’s Dictionary of Angels. I had originally intended to divide the Angels of Children and the Angels of Creation into two different posts, but this does not actually make sense. Childbirth is an inherently creative act, and every single angel associated with children from Davidson’s text gains that association through the fact that it is invoked during childbirth.

If you are using this list to find angelic names for In Nomine it’s worth considering that every name on this list that can be considered for a Servitor of Christopher can also be considered for a Servitor of Eli (though the reverse is not true).

As one of the younger Archangels, Christopher has experienced the last quarter century like a handful of hours, give it two or three hundred years and the details will start to blend together.

Zavatel, Angel of Milk

Zavatel is a tutelary angel who oversees the milk produced by livestock, especially that which is gathered for human consumption. Her celestial form is that of a living being whose four quarters resemble a goat, a cow, a sheep and a yak. Like all cherubs, she takes her role as protector very seriously, and considers both children and livestock to be among her wards. As a result, both Jordi and Christopher have allowed Zavatel to act in their service when Eli abandoned his heavenly cathedral.

As the industry linked to Zavatel’s Word has changed, so has she. It is not at all uncommon to find her studying vacuums and refrigeration in the Halls of Lightning or trading essence and favors in Marc‘s exchange to ensure that dairy farmers and their stock could continue to survive and thrive.

Baenael, Malakite Angel of Curiosity

The Angel of Curiosity is one of Christopher‘s Virtues. Baenael is fairly young for an Angel, and it shows in hen’s choice of vessels who are usually young adults or particularly playful animals.

Curiosity is not a Word given to longevity. Every other Angel to Curiosity has lost something in the Symphonic Echoes of Habaa. The resonance of even a dead Superior will eventually wear down a Wordbound of lesser stature.

Quick & Dirty Orisha

In spite of their close ties to Christian Saints, I have been hesitant to include Orisha in my posts thus far. Santaria is already a grossly misunderstood and misrepresented faith in popular culture. Mining it for RPG characters is almost certain to result in some Cultural Appropriation.

At the same time, it seems inappropriate that a pantheon so closely tied to the Catholic Saints should have such a small footprint in a game centering Abrahamic Saints & Angels.

Giliah, Ofanite Angel of the Pursuit of Happiness

Giliah is an angel on a mission… to learn what it is that makes people happy. When possible she likes to set people on the path towards that happiness, though she will never take them all the way. To Giliah, the pursuit is the part of the experience that makes joy meaningful.

This mission means more to Giliah than any shallow attempt to play at human, which is just as well because their superior, Lithroy, frowns on even that simple deception. When necessary Giliah will adopt one of any number of vessels young and old, crip and abled, diadic and intersex. After all, anyone could be the person to inspire a human to finally seek out what makes them whole and happy.

Had Enough? Hage, Gugutiel, and Hajanitini

Haagenti presents an interesting case study in potential redemption. Unlike most of his fellow Princes, The Great Maw has never been an Angel. Of course, this also means that he never chose to rebel and may not be expected to sacrifice as much if he ascends.. If the Demon of Gluttony is given space to actually recover from the traumas of his youth, the path could be clear (if rocky). The three write ups that follow reflect different possible outcomes of that Redemption.

Of course giving someone as hungry as Haagenti it may take several Archangels working in concert or one willing to sacrifice itself to give him the clarity and security to redeem.

Malakite Oaths for Christopher

Steve Jackson Games has done a good job of providing sample Malakite Oaths whenever they publish an expanded write-up on an Archangel. However, several of the Archangels have not yet received this treatment. Over the next couple months, I’ll post suggestions for these “orphaned” virtues instead of my usual mid-week memes.

Christopher is concerned with protecting childhood and childishness – themes that will likely be reflected in any oaths his Malakim take. With that in mind, I expect these would be some of the more common vows for his blackwings:

• I will not lose my temper when there are children present
• I will purify any school that has been corrupted
• I will help any child find their way home
• I will always stand between a child and harm
• I will heal any child who has suffered from cruelty or neglect
• I will always observe the rules of childrens’ games
  (won’t step on cracks, holds breath in tunnels, silent when ‘jinxed’, &c)
• I will not lie to a child
• I will remind adults what it means to be a child
• I will never stop no matter how heavy the burden
