If you are unfamiliar with Texts from the Avengers (and you’re comfortable with R rated content), I suggest you check it out. It consists of pages upon pages of Texts from Last Night set to pictures from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Wicked + The Divine is an ongoing comic that started in 2014. Written by Kieron Gillen and Illustrated by Jamie McKelvie, it shines a light on brilliance and mortality through the lens of pop stars and divinity.
The premise is relatively straightforward. Every ninety years twelve people will discover that they are reincarnated deities. Overnight they become famous, powerful, and robbed of many of their inhibitions. It’s not that the god’s are evil per-se, but once incarnated they have only two years to live.
Hozuki no Reitetsu (or Hozuki’s Coolheadedness) is a Manga and Anime by Natsumi Eguchi. Both are heavily episodic and revolve around the adventures of Hozuki the Ogre, chief aide to Demon King Enma (lord of the Buddhist underworlds).
As the title implies, Hozuki usually succeeds through a mix of cool, cunning, and level-headedness – though a certain threat of eminent violence is also present. In spite of this, the series is a comedy. Generally speaking, the ogre is the only character to show a lick of common sense, though he will praise it in others when he sees it.
Throne is the core of the Kill Six Billion Demons multiverse. It is a sin riddled, post-apocalyptic meta-heaven built upon the ruined remains of old gods and illustrated by Abbadon (no, not that one). Abbadon’s style is a delightful mix of Peter Chung, Jean Giraud (Mœbius), and Hayao Miyazaki. And that’s all I’m going to say about it until I get around to a review.
