One of the joys of playing a contemporary game like d20 Modern or In Nomine is that you have the ability to make your adventures topical (or not, escapism is entirely valid). With that in mind, I’ve pulled together a selection of Angels and Demons who could be used as avatars of the disease and its impacts.

David, IN 2022, In Nomine, The Marches

“David” by Trows

As one of the eldest angels, the time since The Fall has only felt like 1 second to David. As the embodiment of stone, it’s hardly felt any longer. There is a reason why David was no more heartbroken by the fall of Magog than he was by Malphas. As far as the Archangel of Stone is concerned, both are victims of Lucifer’s rebellion.

Steve Jackson Games made a very intentional choice with In Nomine to make the setting agnostic to any particular faith. As such, the divinity of Jesus is never firmly established (though Dominic & Lawrence clearly believe it) and attempts to discern the truth of such matters will be foiled by the ineffability of the divine.

However, this isn’t necessarily going to stop players from trying to track down figures who witness moments key to individual faith traditions in order to determine what is correct for their individual game.

9 Force, David, In Nomine, Mercurian

Kate sees herself as a protector of the delicate, cracked, or broken; providing them a safe place to stay until they’re strong enough to stand on their own. In order to protect her charges, she maintains two vessels and two roles in spite of the strain on her time.

Kate splits herself in this way so that if anyone should track the body she uses to aid her angelic allies, they will not be led back to the people whom she considers her true charges.

Valeerian, Angel of Firefighters

Valeerian is a robust and powerful Cherub of Stone. In Celestial Form they resemble a great red peacock with animate blue eyes upon their tailfeathers that resemble a forest of dangling nazar when spread.

While Valeerian appreciates strength and fortitude, especially among the charges who form their Word, the angel also has a “I am strong so you don’t have to be” attitude. They work hand in hand with their friend St. Florian to protect, support, honor, and inspire firefighters around the world, and on those rare occasions when one of Yves Cherubs assigned to the protection of Gabriel needs time to recover, Valeerian has been known to step in on a temporary basis.

Clerical Domain, D&D, David, In Nomine

As with everything on this blog, this Stone Domain has been designed as an In Nomine tie in. As such there are some quirks that might align it more closely to the Archangel David than to a typical Dungeons & Dragons Earth element specialist.

However, even with the secondary focus on Solidarity, this should still be perfectly viable in the D&D 5e setting.

Kegner, Angel of the Satanic Temple

First and foremost, it should be acknowledged that the real world Satanic Temple does not adhere to a belief in angels.

Kegner is an iconoclast who believes that heaven has allowed its message to get garbled in transmission, and that the mortal Satanic Temple is doing a good job setting aright the imbalances created by the Dominican and Lawrencian idealization of Christianity. He is pro-choice, pro-equality, and in favor of a strong barrier between the mechanisms of state and religion.

A few months back I was horsing around online with a friend about the right way to introduce an In Nomine/Amber crossover. The rules of that crossover are on hold because I lost a bunch of my working notes – but I still remember some of the conversation we had on how to introduce players to what’s going on…

The Embassy

Some time in the past thousand years or so, Yves payed a call on the Court of Amber. Whether this was a family affair, a state one, both, or neither, few would every really be able to say.

He brought along with him a handful of Archangels who he felt needed to see the Courts and their most prominent members. This embassy included David, Michael, Lawrence, Dominic, and a few of the less well known members of the Seraphim Council.

Protagonists can only go so far on their own without any antagonists. This is just as true for Monster Train as it is for In Nomine.

All told, Monster Train has about 50 different types of enemies, and any one of them could make sense to transpose into In Nomine. However, I will focus on some of the best developed: the bosses.

Kitron is something of a lone wolf. They are a Creationer who is wordbound to the belief that evil is necessary to bring out the best in mankind and in making souls suitable for heaven. When Lucifer fell, Kitron felt their Word come upon them, along with the realization that the rest of heaven would not be understanding of their truth.

When Uriel called for angels to take up the Mantle of Malakim, Kitron waited only long enough to avoid any suspicion. Once their new vows were in place, Kitron was freed to lie about the source and purpose of evil in the world.
