Michael is the Archangel of War, but he has a strong secondary emphasis on finding heroes and champions (his two highest Distinctions). So it only stands to reason that he would also oversee the path towards heroism.

For this particular exercise, I will be using the Hero’s Journey from Joseph Campbell’s monomyth.

Dictionary of Angels, Dominic, In Nomine, Names, Yves

I really didn’t want to combine the angels of Destiny and Judgement when sorting the angels from Gustav Davidson’s Dictionary of Angels for use as character names for In Nomine. Unforunately, you really can’t easily divide them.

I’ve been going back and forth with myself on whether I want to comment on how much I want to say about the… let’s call them schenanegans… coming out of 1 First St. NE.

On the one hand, this is a gaming blog. Hardly the place for in depth political discourse.

On the other, In Nomine deals with angels, demons, and contemporary culture, making it a perfect backdrop for discussions on morals.

One of the joys of playing a contemporary game like d20 Modern or In Nomine is that you have the ability to make your adventures topical (or not, escapism is entirely valid). With that in mind, I’ve pulled together a selection of Angels and Demons who could be used as avatars of the disease and its impacts.

Dominic, IN 2022, In Nomine

“Dominic” by Trows

Dominic only really came into his power after The Fall, as such the past 25 years have likely felt like little more than a fortnight. Adequate time to doll out whatever compensation the Archangel has Judged appropriate, but hardly enough time for any special recognition.

Asmodeus, Dominic, In Nomine, LegalEagle, Real World

So, while I was throwing my temper tantrum at SEO, I actually had my best traffic day in months, and I missed a couple of interesting developments which could fairly easily be worked into a game:

LegalEagle explored the ramifications of suing God (and the Devil)

Father Arango retires after thousands of his baptisms are invalidated over a pronoun

Both strike me as good ways for an In Nomine campaign to examine the interactions between Archangel Dominic, Demon Prince Asmodeus, and their respective servitors.

Steve Jackson Games made a very intentional choice with In Nomine to make the setting agnostic to any particular faith. As such, the divinity of Jesus is never firmly established (though Dominic & Lawrence clearly believe it) and attempts to discern the truth of such matters will be foiled by the ineffability of the divine.

However, this isn’t necessarily going to stop players from trying to track down figures who witness moments key to individual faith traditions in order to determine what is correct for their individual game.

Bureaucracy in Heaven

Bureaucracy, Dominic, Gabriel, In Nomine, Jean, Lawrence, Soldekai, Yves

Most of us dislike Bureaucracy enough that it’s more or less a given that it plays some role in our conceptualization of an interactive Hell. More than that, Steve Jackson publications make clear that Asmodeus‘ realm runs on paperwork, and he’s influential enough to force it on everyone else.

But what about the other side, are there any Archangels who favor bureaucratic systems?

What About Trump

Today is Donald Trump’s last full day as president, though not necessarily his last day being active in the United States political sphere. Even before the January 6 insurrection in the capitol he was easily the most controversial president in most of our lifetimes. He is simultaneously viewed by some as god’s servant on earth and by others as the most publicly an inveterate liar to ever hold the highest office in the United States. Both of these would merit him a place within an In Nomine cosmology, but what role that is would be almost diametrically opposed depending on which outlook you share.

A few months back I was horsing around online with a friend about the right way to introduce an In Nomine/Amber crossover. The rules of that crossover are on hold because I lost a bunch of my working notes – but I still remember some of the conversation we had on how to introduce players to what’s going on…

The Embassy

Some time in the past thousand years or so, Yves payed a call on the Court of Amber. Whether this was a family affair, a state one, both, or neither, few would every really be able to say.

He brought along with him a handful of Archangels who he felt needed to see the Courts and their most prominent members. This embassy included David, Michael, Lawrence, Dominic, and a few of the less well known members of the Seraphim Council.
